Getting Facts Straight: Cat Purring

September 16th, 2008

1. In this day and age, when nations are sending men to space, not even the smartest scientist can tell you (or me) exactly why cats purr.
2. Kittens begin purring a couple of days after birth. Experts believe this is a bonding mechanism that helps notify momma cat that baby cat is well and alive.
3. If you share your hectic existence with a feline companion, it’s a given fact that cats purr when mellow and happy (or curled up on your sofa).
4. Cats also purr when they’re in pain or injured. Some veterinarians believe the vibrations help the healing process.
5. Bobcats, cheetahs, pumas, and wild cats also purr. Basically, any big kitty that doesn’t roar purrs. This does NOT mean you should go around petting them.
6. Purring is as simple as a cat breathing in and out.
7. Research shows that purring comes from the internal laryngeal muscles and the separation of the vocal chords. Cats that suffer from laryngeal paralysis do not purr.
